Frequently Asked Questions
What makes Port City Painting environmentally friendly?
At Port City Painting, our commitment to sustainability goes beyond just paint. We operate vehicle-free, arriving at job sites by pedal bike and trailer, reducing carbon emissions from transportation. We use low-VOC and VOC-free paints, reuse materials when safe and appropriate, and minimize the use of unnecessary plastics on job sites. It’s our way of protecting your home and our environment.
Is low-VOC or no-VOC paint really better for my health?
Yes. Low-VOC and zero-VOC paints drastically reduce exposure to harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are linked to respiratory issues, headaches, and other long-term health effects. These compounds are commonly found in traditional paints and building materials and can remain airborne inside your home for years. We select premium clean-air paints to keep your indoor environment healthier, especially for children and pets.
Can you paint over older oil-based paints safely?
We can! For older surfaces coated with oil-based or high-VOC paints, we use specialized sealers to safely encapsulate VOCs before applying fresh, eco-friendly products. This helps reduce emissions without needing costly and messy removal.
How long does an average project take?
It depends on the size and complexity, but most interior painting jobs take 1–4 days. Our streamlined, low-impact process ensures minimal disruption to your daily routine, all while prioritizing sustainability at the forefront.
Do you work on heritage homes in Kitsilano?
We do! Heritage homes are central to Kitsilano’s charm, and we understand their unique needs. We provide careful prep and finishing with eco-conscious techniques that preserve character while upgrading indoor air safety.
Do you really show up by bike?
Absolutely! We’re proud to be one of the few bike-powered painting companies in Vancouver. Using a bicycle with a trailer is not only eco-conscious, it allows us to work locally and stay closely connected with our Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant and Cedar Cottage communites.
Do you reuse paint brushes and other materials?
Yes, sustainability is also found in the small details. We select higher quality brushes and rollers that can be reused multiple times without affecting quality, minimizing landfill waste and reducing the need for single-use plastics.
